How to find the right vehicle recovery service for you
Few scenarios are as frustrating as your vehicle breaking down, yet 7,000 UK drivers suffer the misfortune every day.
Hopefully it never happens to you. But if it does, it’s best to be prepared with a vehicle recovery service saved in your phonebook favourites. You just never know!
So to help you find the right vehicle recovery service, here’s our guide on pricing, recovery options and everything else you need to know to get back on the road.
Benefits of a vehicle recovery service
There are thousands of vehicle recovery services out there. But not all of them can provide a comprehensive service you would expect from a local car garage.
As well as recovering your vehicle from the roadside, a vehicle recovery service offered by a local garage can also include:
Expert knowledge and guidance
When you choose a vehicle recovery service offered by a local garage, you’ll benefit from all the knowledge and guidance of a qualified technician on the roadside.
If the problem with your vehicle is fixable there and then, you’ll be back on the road in a shorter timespan which could save you money and hassle.
Use of specialist equipment
As well as specialist towing equipment, a local garage recovery service will often carry specialist tools and equipment to diagnose the fault with your vehicle and, where possible, repair it there and then.
It’s an option which cuts out the middle person, saving you time and money towing your vehicle to the nearest repair centre and awaiting diagnosis.
Faster repair times
By choosing an all-in-one vehicle repair service offered by a local garage, everything is resolved in one phone call. From collection and diagnosis through to recovery and repair, the whole process is streamlined preventing a stressful situation becoming more stressful.
How much does a vehicle recovery service cost?
The cost for a vehicle recovery service will depend on distance the recovery vehicle has travelled as well as how far you’ll need to be towed. At C R Allen and Sons, our vehicle recovery service has a set flat fee of £75 plus £2.50 for every mile travelled (prices exc. VAT).
What types of vehicles can be recovered?
Any type of vehicle can be recovered from the roadside, from cars and vans through to motorbikes, tractors and HGVs. At C R Allen and Sons, we recover any vehicle up to the weight of 3.5 tonnes. If your vehicle exceeds this limit, we can recommend you to another trusted recovery service.
What are my recovery options if my vehicle breaks down?
Depending on the vehicle recovery service you choose, your options will be:
- Recover to the nearest repair centre
- Recover to your home or another address; or
- Roadside repair (where possible)
All options will vary on price depending on the distance travelled to reach and recover your vehicle.
What to do if my vehicle breaks down?
If you experience a vehicle breakdown, it’s important to stay calm and think of other road users. If possible, pull over so your vehicle’s not obstructing traffic and switch on your hazard lights.
If it’s safe to do so, position a warning triangle 45 metres (147 feet) behind your vehicle. Don’t do this on a motorway.
Once you’re happy you and your vehicle are safe, contact your preferred recovery service for roadside assistance.
Can I leave my vehicle if it has broken down?
Leaving your vehicle unattended on a public road or highway is not allowed. If you do leave your vehicle, you may be subject to fines and other penalties, depending on your location.
If you have broken down on public property, you may be able to leave your vehicle, but will need permission from the landowner.
